(Hugo Awards)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I was breaking down moving boxes and\u00c2\u00a0 showering during most of the Hugo Award ceremony so it wasn&#8217;t as if I was watching with bated breath.\u00c2\u00a0 Now and then a bit of audio would come through or there&#8217;d be a particularly sweet moment (Ellen Datlow&#8217;s acceptance was understated and lovely) but mostly I saw the results after they were posted like everyone else.\u00c2\u00a0 Last night I threw up a couple of half-assed predictions, mostly to keep myself honest about my preconceptions against the reality of the actual results when they came out today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0So, how&#8217;d I do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Best Novel:\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I predicted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie (Orbit US\/Orbit UK)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The Winner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie (Orbit US\/Orbit UK)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Nothing psychic about this one.\u00c2\u00a0 Leckie had already swept the Nebulas, the Arthur C. Clark Award, the British SF Association Award, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel.\u00c2\u00a0 Short of Larry Correia and Mira Grant joining forces to beat opposing voters with nunchuku at the ballot box\u00c2\u00a0 Justice was going to win at a walk. \u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t fall head over heels for it myself but it&#8217;s a solid book .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>Best Novella: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I predicted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Equoid\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> C<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">harles<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Stross (<em>Tor.com<\/em>, 09-2013)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The Winner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Equoid\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> C<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">harles<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Stross (<em>Tor.com<\/em>, 09-2013)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I waffled on this category\u00c2\u00a0 for a while though I still haven&#8217;t actually read any of the nominees.\u00c2\u00a0 In the end I went Stross over Valente based entirely on the publisher, figuring more people probably saw the Tor story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>Best Novelette<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I predicted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, Ted Chiang (<em>Subterranean<\/em>, Fall 2013)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The Winner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Lady Astronaut of Mars\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by Mary Robinette Kowal (maryrobinettekowal.com \/Tor.com, 09-2013)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0I bet Chiang because for the Hugos you just do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>Best Short Story<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I predicted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, John Chu (<em>Tor.com<\/em>, 02-2013)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The Winner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, John Chu (<em>Tor.com<\/em>, 02-2013)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">This was nothing but a gut feeling.\u00c2\u00a0 Much as Sofia Samatar is a fan favorite (and winner of this year&#8217;s Campbell Award)\u00c2\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t see the majority of voters giving first place to a story with the word &#8220;Selkie&#8221; in the title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>Best Related Work:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I guessed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction, Jeff VanderMeer, with Jeremy Zerfoss (Abrams Image)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The Winner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We Have Always Fought: Challenging the Women, Cattle and Slaves Narrative\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, Kameron Hurley (A Dribble of Ink)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Got blindsided with this category since the Hurley article is a few thousand words against VanderMeer&#8217;s lavishly illustrated and celebrity guest star-filled three hundred fifty odd pages.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great essay though, and an important one.
